I.C.A.N! Programs
Inclusive Community Activities with No Barriers
Lead Corporate Partner
I.C.A.N! Camps provide your child the opportunity to experience acceptance. Each participant will be enrolled in the camp of their choice and participate without an additional support person. Partner camp leaders will be the main aspect of support for your child; however, a Between Friends Club staff (the Recreation Inclusion Coordinator) will be located at each camp for the entire summer.
Our I.C.A.N! Programs gives participants the opportunity to participate in recreational programs in their community.
I.C.A.N! Programs are suited for participants who require minimal support to participate in their community programs
with others who have similar interests to them.

HOW DO I.C.A.N! PROGRAMS WORK?
I.C.A.N! participants will be registered into an existing program of their choice at a local facility. The program
is instructed by the facility staff however, a Between Friends Club Inclusion Facilitator will be in attendance to
provide additional support to the instructor, your child and his/her group.

THE BENEFITS OF INCLUSION
- Provides an opportunity for your child to participate in community camps without the need for additional support
- Creates awareness and acceptance of different abilities
- Challenges participants to develop new skills, increase self-esteem and self-confidence
- Educates staff and participants about inclusion providing the knowledge that makes it possible and fun
RECREATION INCLUSION COORDINATOR (RIC)
The RIC will be supporting each participant’s assigned day camp leader by providing tips and techniques to create an inclusive experience. Before the start of camp, the RICs will provide training to their designated partner facility to educate staff on the inclusion process and best practices. The RIC will also be monitoring the inclusion process throughout each day and be available to all staff for support. Please note that the RIC will not be directly with your child throughout the day.
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE
I.C.A.N! participants must be a Between Friends Club member to register in Inclusion Camps. Members of all ages will be accepted. Please note that age groups vary with each partner camp and each partner camp may not offer all age groups.
Members must have an interest in the desired camp and be eager to participate in the camp. Members must also be able to participate successfully in a larger than the typical Between Friends Club ratio and require minimal support. Members who need more than the amount of support inclusion camps provide may be recommended to attend Camp Bonaventure.
A Day in the Life:
A week prior to camp, each RIC will contact parents to discuss individual needs. A home visit may be suggested to discuss the inclusion process and how to best meet your child’s needs and abilities at camp. The RIC will then educate leaders on individual tips that will create an inclusive experience for your child. The RIC will be a source of support throughout the entire week should leaders need support. The RIC staff will also be available to meet each participant upon arrival at camp and introduce them to their leaders and peers.
